Closing in on Baghdad
More tanks and units arrived, we were still waiting for the main attack, all of our tanks got ready and led us all in as the artillery fired away at Baghdad still. We were driving for several hours this was our biggest mission yet, A-10s would fly over and destroy any enemy tank near the brigade, We could tell we were getting closer to the capitol because there were more defenses and we could start to hear our own artillery.
Artillery from the enemy was worse than ever, suicide bombers came from all sides and to make things worse stinger site were set up on various hills, five tanks were destroyed all ready, then a suicide bomber ran towards my tank, and a huge explosion occurred, I was flung from my tank and was unconscious.
I was just left there, all my crew mates except for one was still alive, his name John, me and John grabbed any guns we could find which was all AK-47s we found tons of ammunition.
We carried as much as possible; we finally arrived at a town. We went totally off trail, we went eastwards just trying to find another American but no luck immediately entering the town we were shot at we ran into a civilian building and shot out the window, killing several Iraqis. We had to find a way to contact someone, we fought from building to building killing a total of eleven Iraqis finally we found a radio transmitter that we could signal someone with. We were in contact with the marines; they said a Comanche would be right over escorting a Chinook.
It took several hours for it to arrive, but the Comanche wasnt with it when it arrived, I asked the pilot where it was, he said it was gone for good, the pilot told us he was taking us back to Kuwait for a medical check up, but we insisted we were fine, so he took us up to our brigade.
On the way to our brigade, there were scorch marks everywhere, tank pieces and human bodies laying everywhere. It was quite scary to see such a mess.
A quad cannon, which damaged its second propeller so we had to bail, shot at the Chinook, we were only a mile from the brigade. We ordered an armored transport to come get us, and within five minutes it was there picking us up.
We were finally at the foot step of Baghdad, artillery still rained but there was nothing we could do, we went onto highway 8 and the others would surround Baghdads airfield. Both of those locations were covered with tanks. It was thirty tanks to ten, and we had the ten but we still had an advantage. A roar of shells hit a tank that was destroyed with ease, several men in other tanks jumped out with there hands up, other tanks shot back, and we shot right back at them.
It took two days to secure highway 8, there were at least one hundred and fifty tanks, but that was just the beginning, with the highway open now, supplies could now come too.
It took only a few hours to capture the airfield several rocket soldiers and snipers went into the air field at night and rigged all the tanks with explosives, in the morning all that was left was some scorched metal.
Baghdad was surrounded, and units were heading north past Baghdad to secure other cities such as Mosul air craft assistance came in from the country of Turkey, The north is about to fall now too. All that was left was Baghdad
